DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES, ROOM FOR YOURS

Belonging can mean more than one thing.

If you moved to Canada

As a first-generation immigrant, you may be adjusting to unfamiliar routines, languages, or ways of relating. Separation from familiar support systems, changing family roles, and starting again can bring many emotions—alongside possibility, pride, and connection.

Our conversations can make room for cultural adjustment, identity changes, relationships across distance, and finding support and belonging in a new place.

If you grew up between cultures

As a second-generation immigrant, you may be finding your own way while remaining connected to your family’s traditions. Personal autonomy, intergenerational differences, and expectations about responsibility may feel straightforward in some areas and complicated in others.

We can explore identity, guilt, boundaries, and belonging without deciding that one culture or way of living is the right one.

These are possibilities, not a checklist. Not every immigrant experiences family conflict or trauma, and you don’t need either to seek support. Your relationships and cultural values may also be important sources of strength.

EXPECTATIONS, IDENTITY & SELF-WORTH

What have you learned to carry?

Family expectations, childhood experiences, discrimination, migration, and wider social pressures can influence how we understand ourselves. For some people, beliefs such as “I don’t belong,” “I’m responsible for everyone,” “My needs don’t matter,” “I’m not good enough,” or “I must not disappoint my family” become familiar.

We can be curious about how these beliefs formed, what they have helped you navigate, and how they affect your choices and relationships today.

Cultural values are not inherently problematic. Caring for family, staying connected, and honouring traditions can be deeply meaningful. Therapy offers room to explore what matters to you and where an expectation or protective pattern may no longer fit.

Intergenerational experiences and trauma

Family stories, ways of coping, and experiences of adversity can influence different generations. When trauma is part of your history, intergenerational trauma therapy can explore its effects without assuming that migration, cultural differences, or every difficult family experience is traumatic.

HOW WE CAN WORK TOGETHER

Understanding your experience, in context.

I bring a culturally responsive, collaborative, and down-to-earth approach to immigrant mental health support in Ontario. You bring your knowledge of your life; I bring curiosity and clinical training. We decide together what feels useful.

Relevant memories and beliefs

When distressing experiences continue to affect the present, EMDR may support processing of relevant memories, emotions, and beliefs. Preparation, readiness, and consent guide the work; your identity and culture are not problems to reprocess.

Protective parts and patterns

IFS-informed work offers a compassionate way to understand parts that try to protect you through responsibility, perfectionism, self-criticism, or keeping the peace. We explore their roles without judging them or the cultural context in which they developed.

Emotions and the body

Somatic approaches invite gentle awareness of tension, sensations, and emotional responses, with room to pause or adjust. This may support connection to the present and greater awareness of what you need.

LANGUAGE, CONNECTION & PRACTICAL DETAILS

A conversation in the language that feels like you.

I’m Angelica Esposito, MA, MSW, RSW, a Registered Social Worker and Psychotherapist. I grew up in Italy and have lived in the UK, Australia, and Canada. That experience informs my curiosity about belonging; it doesn’t mean I’ll assume I know your story.

As an Italian-speaking therapist in Ontario, I offer psychotherapy in English and Italian. You can choose the language in which you feel most comfortable expressing yourself. Learn about therapy in Italian. My style is personable and conversational, with gentle humour when appropriate.
